Save the Grape: Wine Club

Save grapes from extinction. All you have to do is learn.

There are over 1,400 known grape varietals on earth. In the U.S., 20 grapes account for ~99% of our wine drinking.

F*** that.

Behind the scenes

Painstakingly curated wines from under-represented regions and varietals requires a lot of learning, traveling, and, of course, tasting. Every wine you interact with has been delicately selected as a gem worthy of your company (after vigorous notetaking).

About your sommelier

Ashwin Muthiah (left) is the author of In Pursuit of Flavor and Owner/Founder of Personal Sommelier DC. He spends the vast majority of his creative energy exploring under-represnted wines — wherever they may come from. Ashwin lives happily with his fiancée Savannah wherever life calls them, always with a notebook and a guitar.

Why do grapes go extinct?

The U.S. has historically been the largest wine-market in the world. Because we tend to drink wines only from a handful of varietals, numerous winemakers for decades have been ripping up indigenous vines and planting the same popular international ones instead as a means for their wineries to survive. Eventually, the indigenous grapes disappear entirely from the face of the earth. Join me to save them.

A Practice of Gratitude:

Dear Fellow Wine-Lovers -

Save the Grape: Wine Club would not exist if it weren’t for the curious, the adventurous, the conscientious. Whether you ultimately join or not, I’m deeply grateful for your consideration. Without you, there would be no Save the Grape.

“Ashwin's depth of knowledge of wine-- especially more esoteric and underappreciated varietals-- is matched only by his engaging personality and philosophical approach to wine tasting. I've learned more in an hour or two of Zoom classes with him than I have in multi-day tasting trips.”

— MITCH FIELDING

“Loved the wine selection from Portugal. Inspired to fly over + visit Luis Pato’s winery in Portugal... perhaps next year? :)”

— LILY LaTULIPPE

“The way his knowledge is shared, is so authentic and unique. He is literally empowering you to feel confident about what you have to say, think, and feel about wine.”

— JENNIFER RHEAUME
